Hi Folks, I'm a new user of Pha$ar... just pulled out the old STart magazine
with version 3.02 on it, and am quite impressed. (Yes, I'm that far behind in
my reading!)
Now for my question/comment. I've read through all the messages on here, and I
too was not happy about the way some "transfers" did not appear on my
statement. I can deal with the monthly delay of credit cards, but for car
payments, I regard that as an expense (given that my car will probably have
zero value by the time I finish paying it off!).
But I think I found a solution--or perhaps I'm just deceiving myself because
I'm a new user. I created a "standard transaction" with a transfer from
"checking" to "Ford Credit", and then I got sneaky. I next make a "SPLIT"
payment for $0 from Ford Credit to "Interest" and "Car Payment" for $50 and
$250 (or whatever). The program doth protest briefly, but it lets you get away
with this even though 50+250 doesn't equal 0. In fact, I can even go back and
edit the standard transaction and eliminate the first line of the SPLIT
payment completely.
The result seems to do what I hear some folks wishing for on here. The payment
registers as a decrease in my Ford Credit liability account, and it appears on
my monthly expense list, but it does NOT double bill me in any of the summary
financial statements as far as I can tell.
Have I just done something brilliant or utterly stupid? Your comments
(especially if the former) would be much appreciated.

Steve,
I think you found a good solution for your needs. If I remember
correctly the "problem" some users had was a result of the way they were
keeping their records. Not a real problem with Pha$ar, but rather the lack of
a feature they would like to have. You should not have a problem.
BTW that is about the same method I use.

I'm having a printing problem with PHA$ER.
I have a Tandy 24 pin Dot Matrix printer. I've set the "UserPrefrences" to my
printer (Dot Matrix and Screen print) and have run a test print.
It prints: This is the top printable line. This line should be in condensed
mode. (which it's not) The numbers in the next line (50,100,132) should be
right justified.
Then on the next line there is a 50 and a line that goes off the page. --------
--------------------------------------------------------------- (If I try to
run two "print tests" in a row ,the second does not print unless I turn the
printer off and then back on.)
I save the user preferences and then go to "Print Cash Flow Summary" and
nothing happens. The printer just sits there like no messages are being sent
to it. I've tried turning the printer of and then back on to reset it and
still nothing happens.
Any ideas on how to get this working would be greatly appreciated.

Riddler,
I would start by checking the manual with the Tandy and resetting it
to standard defaults. Most Tandys use the control pannel to set the defaults.
Second is Pha$ar. The print default should be to "Printer" or Query.
If you are set to print to screen, it won't print to printer will it?
If after resetting all the printer settings back to their defaults you
might need to change some Pha$ar setting in the custom printer settings, you
will need your printer manual.

I checked the demo of Home Accounts, too. The interface seems OK and some of
the features seem OK, but not enough to invest my money in...I didn't like
some of the interface elements...
While PHASAR is no beauty, interface-wise, it is OK for what it does... hope
there's an upgrade int he future though (ie, v5)...

Gee Whiz Gang,
I'm expecting my newly purchased USED copy of Pha$er to arrive any day.
I saw someone selling it in the For Sale Topic so I grabbed it up with a few
other things. The only financial program I've purchased in the past Home
Accountant from the defunct Habba Software. I like it... but my wife has
gotten used to Quicken on my brother-in-laws MS-DOS clone. I'm hoping that
Pha$er will rival Quicken. Any comments?
Our main feature need out of a financial software package is to inter-
relate accounts... we have a lot of medical bills stemming from a newly born
son (with renal problems). Luckily, I have great insurance but I still have
to pay some... and there are a lot of people asking for money. Does anyone
have any suggestions on how to manage insurance claims, payments and balances?
Oh yeah, yet another question... the version of Pha$er I'm getting is
supposedly the next to newest version. What is the latest version, what are
the differences, and is anyone supporting upgrades right now? If so, how
much?

Scott,
Congratulations on Pha$ar. I believe you and your wife will like it.
There are a number of ways to set up accounts to track you insurance
payments. Do you know at the time of the first bill, how much will be paid or
is it a guess until you get the check? When do you pay for the services (when
received, when billed, after the insurance has paid it's part?)
I would likely set up an account for insurance due. When I paid a bill
that I expected to be reimbersed for I would pay the bill from Checking and
add a transaction to the insurance account for (negative) their amount due,
resulting in a account payable. When the inusrance was paid I would then show
a transfer from the checking account to the insurance account.
Use the "Note" field to indicate date of service, type of service etc
to help you identify the transaction later.

Well, so far... most of them are billing insurance directly and sending
us an FYI copy. Then we get a copy of the benefits paid as the insurance
fields through things. My wife has been doing all of this in Quicken and I
haven't paid a bit of attention to anything except the checking account part
of it.
Luckily my wife has had some accounting so hopefully she will know what
all you guys are talking about. [grin] I haven't gotten the program yet
(expecting it any day now)... and I'm not sure of the version number yet
either... other than the description I gave earlier.
I'm sure to have more questions when I get the program and try to set up

Pha$er users thought it would suit my needs.

I have just been working with the latest verions of Pha$ar and I would
like to note that in addtion to the improvements previously memtioned the
programs handling of split or multible transactions has been improved. Now
when you edit a existing split transaction, the rest of the transactions that
were part of the split are also updated and if the amount is changed the
origional (or total) entry is also update.
I consider this a major improvment.

Two major improvements that I have noticed from version 3 to 4.03 are being
able to alarm standard transactions (tell you when your bills are due) and
the ease of entering transactions using frequent payees.
Minor improvements in the reports section are also present but you don't
use reports everyday, the other two benefits you do. Ron

Damian,
$24.95 from 4.0, more from older versions. From 4.0, I understand there is
more speed and, for sure, split files are all updated when a change is made in
one of them. You might best drop Terrific a line and ask them.
Jeff usually is right, but I got him on one thing this time. Don't send your
disk. Send a photocopy of your manual cover and your disk, and send that in
with your check and request, including address. It's been about a year since I
posted the prices I got over the phone from Terrific, and forgot the prices
that go with different amounts of upgrade, but I talked with them a few days
ago to find out the procedure and know that's correct. I thought sure that
they said at that time that the upgrade was more for versions less than 4.0,
and I KNOW it is more for some older versions. Call to be sure, and post the
info here.

Chaz- When you are in the standard transaction, you can list whether that
particular bill is monthly, weekly, biweekly or quarterly. Then when you pay
the bill Phasar will figure out when the bill is due next. Then under the
setup menu chose "alarm standard transactions" and when you initialize PHA$AR
the screen will tell you if standard transactions are due, post due etc.
This has saved me more than once from being late with a credit card payment.

I like Pha$ar. It is fine for all my home accounting. I might even
work for a small business. It is not sutable for any complex business even a
small one. I help out a friend with a dance studio and it would not help
there at all.
It is not perferct, and I have seen features in some other programs I
would like to see in Pha$ar, but I have not seen another program I would use
inplace of Pha$ar.
The best manual in my estamation was the older one with the Eggberts.
It had a nice way to lead you through setting things up. I don't think most
people, experienced with Atari, should have too difficult a time setting
things up. The real problem is decieding what you want the program to do for
you. Pha$ar has a lot of flexability and you need to set it up for your own
use.
I bleieve the version I have is the latest out.

EITHER of the above and send a Check for $24.95.

week later I had it, as I recall.
I thought the previous version was pretty fast, but this one is definitely
faster. It flies! I like the relinking with editing multiple entries, too. I
wonder if I can now delete no longer active accounts, etc.

Hi, I've used PHA$AR for over 2 years now and love it! I've set up a
PHA$AR.REG file that can be adapted to your needs. I can upload it if anyone
wants, but remember, it's a Canadian form. The best example .REG file I've
seen is the one that is was included with PHA$AR 3.
I currently have version 4.03. What is the difference between 4.03 and 4.08?
I notice that the check printing feature does not work proplerly on 4.03? Is
this fixed in 4.08?
I have a TT030 and PHA$AR V4.03 works extremely well with the TT in TT Medium
res. I've had no problems as of yet.
I don't know all about Quicken PC, but I've seen it running and I still think
Phasar is much better. Is it true that PHA$AR is out for the IBM?
Enough said!

the Phasar.EXE and a converstion from ST reg to DOS reg. However, I have

are you having with the check writing. Mine works very well (vers. 4.03).

Check printing is supposedly fixed. I haven't tried it. There are also many

Hello All,
Hopefully one of you 'gents' can help me out here. While we currently have
Phasar (4.0) here, we didn't start using it till lately. Since we run 2
business (both small) from here as well as our personal books, we wanted to
use Phasar for all three.
The problem is that Phasar does not provide (apparently) some very important
reports such as: Balance Sheet, Trial Balance, Profit/Loss Statements, and
Income/Expenses Statement. Our bookkeeper is currently trying to get us to
use Bedford on her machine, but we have no wish to for various reasons.
So... could any of you tell me whether these reports are indeed available in
the new version, or will there be a chance that these will be included in
future updates?

Kent,
Pha$ar will do Balance sheets etc, but you need to go to the P-TAX
part of the program and define your own reports. It is somewhat like using a
spreadsheet program.
It is not real easy, but it can be done and once done it will update
itself very easy each month.

I have been using PHA$AR for years, and like it a lot. I recently got a TT
with monochrome screen, and find that it does not work properly on the 19"
screen. I have read that it work on the colour monitors, and the program runs
ok with the 19", it just does not display things properly. It appears that the
screen draws are very specific to a 640x400 monitor, and things end up
incorrectly drawn, and invers does not come out the way it should. Some
things are inverted that should not be, and some that should are not.
Does anyone else have experience with using it on the TT? right now I have
kept it running on the old Mega 4, which I still have set up, but I would like
to see a version that runs properly on a 19" monitor.
I am running v1.08, which I think is the latest.

Jeff,
I generally agree. Pha$ar will only do for a -basic- business. It
will do some basics, but many businesses need more. You can do a lot with P-
Tax, but this is not a ready to run thing for a business.
For home use, however, it works fine out of the box.

Yep. It works on the TT in TT-High, but it is not very graphicly
pleasing. Somethings are downright confusing.
I have both monitors and I use the High Res even if it does not look
right. I hate to heat up the Color monitor just for Pha$ar and I won't give
up the TT-High.
I also would like to see a version that will work better with TT-High,
but I am betting against it. Pha$ar uses a lot of methods that would be a lot

OK, here's a Pha$ar question. I am a member of an investment club,
where each member contributes money each month (the amount can vary,
but is multiples of $10), then the group decides what stock to buy
that month (or decides to hold the money if things aren't favorable).
Now, independently of that, one might also decide to invest in stocks
or mutual funds. How would one set that up as an account _and_ as an
income, or would it be an expense and an income? Would one consider
it an account like Visa (except hopefully positive), and then try to
how ups and downs?

Mike,
Consider setting up an income account for the money that you have to spend and
have not used yet. Then another account set up like a checking account to
handle the stocks/mutual funds. Since both of them are basically money that
you can draw upon (not saying that you will, but that is how I look upon it),
this way the money only shows up once. After that it is handled via transfers
from one account to another.

It is hard to have a stock as an account because the value changes
from day to day. Reconciliation would be a nightmare. I tried it that way
for a while.
I dont include my stocks as account, expenses, or income. I have them
on my net worth statement with a cell for #of Shares, a cell for current price
and a cell that multiplys the 1st two cells. Then I have a cell that that adds
all the 3rd cells together for a total value of all stocks. My mutual funds
are also set up the same way.
I do however have nocashflow income and expense catagories for things
like commissions, cap. gains, dividends etc.
I have a Schwabb 1 acct. that does have a margin acct. within it and I
keep the margin acct as an acct. in Phasar.
Also on the subject of Phasar, its getting close to tax time.

goes, if we had a bunch of different people, each making a different form, we
could really save a bunch of time. I'd gladly share a Sch. E if I got a 1040,
Sch B, etc etc in return. One person could be a coordinator and put it all in
an LZH for anyone to use. Do it each year and we would all be set up in
January to do projection for that year not to mention getting our taxes done

Ken,
Since my set-up is different than yours I can only make a few
suggestions that have helped me.
First I know nothing of LaserBrain. I'm more of a
candleBrain myself.
Most lasers cannot print a full 66 line, 11 inch page. Most
programs like Pha$ar expect a 66 line (6 lpi) page. You may need to
do some adjusting.
Work with your set up in Pha$ar. It's not too difficult to
get right.
Bu sure your Laser is turned on -before- you run Pha$ar. It
does not like it if it does not find a printer online when it loads.
Pha$ar is funny about buffers and Lasers. Without one it is
very slow. With many it will not print at all. I am using CodeRam
with no problems.

I got my contribution checks printed today, 42 of them, and in the mail before
the end of the year. The SLM804 worked like a charm with LaserBrain. Thanks
for the help, Joe.
I shortened the page length to 63 lines, and made sure I had the printer
turned on _before_ booting PHA$AR. I think the page length was probably not
the critical factor. After Joe mentioned it, I recalled hearing that printer
story before.
I entered all of the check data, and then did a search in the "view/edit"
option for the checks I had written, with the selections set for printing
checks and sorting by check number. That allowed me to experiment, because I
could select for printing any check I wanted to. I kept some that had printed
OK yesterday, and renumbered (in PHA$AR) some that had not come out so well.
(I noticed that renumbering the main item in a split series evoked a question
about renumbering the sub-items when in the "enter new" option, but only a
warning in the "view/edit" option. I thought the new version _always_ did an
update, but it doesn't. The slider on the listing of entries in the "enter
new" option allows the user to go back and edit previous entries and return to
entering by pressing ESC. That is where an update on splits occurs. It's a
nice feature.
Something strange happened while printing, and I recall having a problem with
it a year ago, also. Somehow the numbers of the checks get changed in PHA$AR
in the "view/edit" option. For example, I found that the numbers might go 43,
43, 44, 44, 45, 45, etc., when they had been input as 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, etc.
I had to do some renumbering to fix it. I just renumbered in the option,
clicked on the item that had the same number as the blank check I was holding,
and fed the check into the manually feed. It worked fine.

Can anyone suggest a simple way to handle this. One of the most frequent
transactions that I do is transferring money from checking to cash via an ATM.
But version 4 cannot have another account as a frequent payee so you have to
enter the whole line manually (I know you are all crying out there for me!)
To set up a standard transaction for this is not the answer since you would
always have to exit the enter transactions mode and then re enter (that's even

Ron - For my ATM txns I send them to Cash also. Then I save the sales
receipts for things I buy and enter them under the Cash... account. Works fine
for me, but I use Pha$ar to track expense categories. I don't use the 'cash
flow' option at all. In fact, I have a feeling my method might produce some
screwy cash flow results, but for me it's more important to see that I spent
$xxx on groceries and $yyyy on gasoline instead of the balance between income
and outgo. ;)
If Pha$ar isn't letting you set things up the way you want with the standard
txns, don't forget about the ^L shortcut when entering transactions manually.
It isn't as fast as the standard txns but it will retain all your amounts etc.

into the conclusion you just came to a bit closer. As I understand it, the
cat. and acct. are basically on in the same. When you put something in the

There are actually 2 Cash CATs. One is total cash, the other net cash. In my
manual, it is explained on pg 140. If you dont have the same manual, look in
the table of contents for a Chptr. on Transactions then look down til you come
to a topic called "Cash Account and Cash Transactions".
Hope this helps some.

Well, if you WANT to track your cash accurately, just set up an account named

Pha$ar won't know that it's a cash account. You will.

Why not use the built in CASH account? It funny you should be talking of cash
spending because I've been having some questions about it. The manual dosen't
really explain 'cash flows' very well, and the expense 'Cash...' is a non-cash
flow expense.
Does anyone know what this means? Can anyone give a good example of non-cash
flow useage? If I'm using the Cash... expense item, is this causing me to
skew my cash flow reports any?

John:
Cash Flow is Income - Expenses - Account Contributions. If you mark one of
these as no cash flow, it will not be used in the equation.
All cash flow tells you is how much more money you have in your pocket and
bank accounts than you did at the beginning of the period. That's why you
mark your bank accounts and credit card accounts as no cash flow.

Daewards,
I dont understand what it is you would gain from an account called
Currency? What could you do with that that you cant do with the Cash Acct?
If your talking about tracking to the last penney, you can do that with the
Cash Acct. as long as you are sure to enter every thing you spend. If you
want to know how much cash you are suppose to have you can just look at the
netcash Cat.
To All,
Has anyone thought about electronic transfer of their Phasar Tax forms
to the IRS? I've been working hard on mine and am concidering uploading some
of them for others to use. Is there any interest in these things?

All,
Remember, Cash flow might be a negative amount also. As for Cash
being nocashflow, there is a cash exspense and a net cash exspense. Lets say
you write a check for $10 over purchase. When you enter the transaction on
Phasar, you use spilt trans. The purchase goes under the proper cat.
Groceries etc. The Cash goes into cash cat. When you put the $10. in cash,
it actually goes into to cats. Cash(cash total) and Net Cash(the amount of
cash you have left in your pocket, and or the cash you spent without enter the
spending in Phasar).
Now when you spend cash and enter it into Phasar, the amount in Net
Cash will be reduced by the amount of that transaction, but the Cash total Cat
will remain the same. So what you do is budget an amount that can be spent
without being entered into Phasar. This budgeted amount SHOULD BE what is
left in Net Cash.
When you go to an ATM and take money from your checking acct. that
should be transfered to the Cash acct. This is actually puting money into the
total and net cash cats. and works just like the above example. In other
words the account and cat. are the same thing.
As for Credit cards etc. these accts. can be made cash flow or no cash
flow. If you want to make sure you are bringing the balance down on an acct.
make it a cashflow acct. and budget it for the amount you want it to come down
each month. If you know you will pay it off each month, then just make it
nocashflow.

The term "cash flow" merely refers to your "flow of wealth" or what you spent
your Money on, not necessarily from cash alone. Don't confuse cash flow with
what is happening in your cash account.
Ron
Bill,
I still don't understand why you wouldn't want to have your credit cards
included in cash flow. If you track each individual charge and put them in
their proper cat. (i.e. resturant) and then you have the card account as a
non cash flow, then you won't see these included in your totals for their
respective catagories. Isn't this right?

Glad you were able to figure out how to budget accounts. It really
can help bring thoughs balances down.
As for the Tax templates, I hope to have them ready by the end of the
month. For those of you who have keeped accurate records in Phasar, I will
(hopefully) have a list included of Tax Codes, either from the Phasar Manual
or that I made up if the manual didnt have them, so that you can just go into
your budget and enter the codes, then go into the Phastax.prg and fill in a
few cells ie. name SSN, verify the figures and your done. The template will
include 1040 long, Sch A & B, and Form 8606(nondeductible IRA Contributions).
I am also concidering the IRA worksheets on Page 19 & 20 of the tax book.
If anyone has comments, suggestions, or would like to make
contrbutions to the template, let me know either here or by E-mail.
Mike,
You may very well be right! I don't know. That is why I brought it
up. I dont see why we cant send E-mail to the IRS with our forms printed out
in ASCII? I was hopeful that there might be someone with Ideas about this.

Ron,
No thats not quite right. Puting a charge account as Cash Flow is
done so that you can see how much money is going into or comming out of that
account. Example: George has put to many things on his Master Card. Now he
wants to bring the balance back down over time. To make sure he is bringing
the balance down, he makes it a Cash Flow acct. He budgets $25. a month to
that account. Now if he still spends to much money with his Master Card, say
$50. more than what he puts into that account, his Cash Flow Report will show -
$75. Cash Flow to that Acct(Note that was a negative amount). Now that will
tell George that he had more money going out of his Master Card acct than he
had going in. Also, his overall Cash Flow will be $75. more positive(or less
negative depending on Georges spending habits) than if he had not spent that
$50. and made a payment of $25.
Making an acct. Cash Flow or NoCashFlow will have no effect on
exspense catagories. Either way, if George uses his Master Card to go to the
restarant, and enters that into the Restarant Cat. the Restarant Cat. will
show the money spent. If the Master Card acct. is made a Cash Flow acct
though, it will also show that much less going into the Master Card acct.
Hope this helps, but if not let me know.
Anna,
You are probably right! Maybe what I need to do is ask Genie If they
have a way to do it, or if it must be done through a licensed Preparer.
I just feel as Mike Keller does, that we do have the ability to do it
so it SHOULD be allowed.
Joe,
I have used my Phasar forms in the past to mail my return without any
problem. If I cant send them E-mail, I will use them via U.S.P.S.

Bill,
I would like to contribute some help making the templates. If you could tell
me the ones which you have not gotten to and would like to include, please let
me know. I've done some work with the templates (making a net worth statement
and a consumables expense report) so I may be able to muddle through on a
simple one.
The budgeting accounts was a _real_ help in making a realistic budget. Let me
give an example on how helpful this is.
I have been putting $150 a month into my savings account for school. The month
my bill is due I have $1200 budgeted in the 'Education' expense. I transfer
$700 from the Savings to checking that I have saved and pay the bill. Even
though I have a close to $0 cash flow for the month, I find myself with plenty
of money in my checking account!
What happened? I didn't budget for the influx of $700 from my savings
account. Usinf the Accounts budget, I budget my savings account for -$700
that month and, viola, my cash flow is now faithfully reflecting how much
money I have to spend.
Thanks all,

When I transfer money, I just put the destination account in as payee. For

John,
I am near completion with the forms I will be using in Phasar. What I
had in mind when I mentioned contributions, was forms that others may have
need for or would like to see in a template that is to be uploaded.
So John, if you want any other forms that I have not mentioned, or if
someone else has a request for certain forms, I'd be glad to have those forms
made so that I might include them. Who knows, I might need them myself
someday. One form I might suggest is a Schedule E. I dont need one, but I
have in the past and someone else may love to have it included.
I'm also glad to hear that I was able to help you in budgeting
accounts. Another way to use that feature is this. I do not have budget Cat.
for vacation. I have a savings Acct. that I have named Vacation. I budget a
certain amount to that Acct. and at Vacation time I make a NoCashFlow
withdrawel from that Acct. Works great.

John,
Ken Van is correct. I do transfers that way all the time. Another
interesting point, you can include transfers as part of a multiple transaction
too!
Suppose you want to put $25 from Checking to savings. Lets say you
are going to have Phasar print a check to do this also. You wont want the
payee on the check to say "Savings", you will want it to have the name of the
institution where the savings acct. is. To do this, put the payee name you
want on the check in under payee, then under catagory enter SPL for (Split
Transaction). Next enter the check # and the $25. amount. Phasar will then
ask for the 1st exspense catagory. Now type in XFER. Phasar will then bring
you back to the payee entry on the 2nd line of the Split Transaction. you can
now enter the acct. you want to transfer the money to. you then just finish
the transaction as you normally would. When you go to print the check, the
payee will be the name of the bank where your savings acct. is.
This is just a little trick which has come in handy for me. Hope I
didnt bore any one.

John and anyone else interested,
I have discovered a problem. There doesnt seem to be a way to add
forms to the Phasar.tax file other than to make them. This is not a major
problem, because if someone needed a form that wasnt in their Phasar. tax
file, but they were able to d/l it, they could put it in a seperate Phasar.tax
file and use it that way (it just would not be able to automaticly share info
with the other Phasar.tax file).
******************WARNING WARNING WARNING**************************
I just had a big set back! If you are making tax forms in Phasar, DO
NOT ALLOW THERE TO BE TOO MANY CELLS REFERENCING NONEXSISTING CELLS!!!! I was
renaming forms. This is done by cloning & deleting. To make a long story
short, Cells were referencing cells on other forms with the old names. Ram
must have overloaded or something because I was making a back-up, everything
locked up, the back-up didnt complete, and both the back-up and original were
DESTROYED!!!! I was 3/4ths done. OH HEAVY SIGH!!

Ken Van & John,
Thanks for the sympathys! I'm just about back to were I was before
the crash. I find that the experience I gained from working on it so much
before the lock-up has made my progress since, much faster.
At the time of the crash I was in Phastax and using Maxifile as an ACC
to back-up the tax file to floppy. I think what happenned is that I just over
taxed(no pun intended) RAM. I had just Cloned and deleted a bunch of forms to
change their names. Many Cells were referencing other Cells that nolonger
existed because the forms were deleted. Also I figured out later that it does
no good to back-up this way unless you first do a "Save Tax File". Phasar
doesnt Save every time you back out of a form, just when you quit the program.
So RAM must have been very busy and just got Pi??ed off and decided to teach
me a thing or 2.
Oh well! Heres to beening older and wiser.

something about form 1040PC. I called the Tele-Tax # to find out more. It
doesnt sound like something we can use on Phasar yet. To file a 1040PC you
must use IRS aproved software. Does anyone have any input on this? You'd

there is some Atari software that is IRS approved to file 1040PCs?

Wow!! I have never had that problem, but 25 SPLITS? It may have
something to do with saving the data. After so many transactions, Phasar does
update the .REG. Do you have a hard disk? Is it possible you have filled you
disk to full?
Another possiblity might be, did you at some point enter an amount,
then tab back and change something? That sometimes seems to cause Phasar to
lose track, esspecially if you entered an amount that would have been more
that the remaining amount of the whole transaction.
Let us know if you find out anything for sure. Good luck!

Yes I have a hard drive, and it is not full. In fact I did what you

longer there, just a blank. I couldn't find anything wrong so I went ahead
completed the transaction, when I got down to where it should be zero, the
program wanted more data. So I tabbed back to the beginning and checked each
amount, same thing. Then I totaled the ticket up on the adding machine to make
sure the total was right, it was, so I deleted the whole transaction and did
it over, this time extra special careful, no tabbing back with the same
result. I did notice that after the 25th split the payee column was blank.
I have a body shop and I'm attempting to use Phasar for the

This one may be beyond me to figure out for you. I don't know if this
is still a valid #, but you might try calling 1-415-957-0886 to see if Antic
can help you.
Another idea is to make it two separate transaction dividing the total
by 2. Phasar isn't really meant to run a business, however I'd probably use
it if I were you too. Also, try making sure that, if you have a long
transaction like that, that there are no other transactions ahead of it. In
other words, if you are entering transactions, and you come to a long one like
that, exit out of Transaction mode and go back in to enter that big one. I
don't know if any of this will work or if it is worth it or you have some
other problem causing this behavior, but it's all I can come up with. Good
luck and keep us posted.

Bill,
I have read that in this topic, that Phasar is not meant for business,
but it is really handy and informing to see the printed reports come spewing
out. To be honest I have also been using Quicken under emulation, but it is s-
o-o s-l-o-w! I want Phasar to work for two reasons, mainly because the ST is
much easier to operate and the Number One reason that I want it to work is I
don't want to give up on Atari!
Also I don't think starting with a fresh Enter New will work either
because that's what I did the second time around and still the same result.
Actually I probably wouldn't have to split each ticket, but I want the part
numbers and descriptions for each part in the file in case I need to look
something up (such as getting overcharged).
Thanks for your replies.

A workaround might be to have two transactions with half of the splits on the
same day. Oh, I see Bill had the same idea.
I doubt that the ANTIC number is valid. I would recommend you contact

is other Atari software made for running a business. You wouldn't have to give

I still am hoping to be done by Sunday. It may not be as complete as
I hope it to be, but should be useful. It will be done to a point that it
would be good to have someone else try it out and give feedback. Sooooo
hopefully, I'll have something to send you tomorrow.
I'm also wondering how many people will use it, and if a new topic in
the RT is warrented? I intend to make a Readme.txt file, but I still expect I
may get a lot of questions about it.
Darlah! What do you think?
BTW John, you probably wont have that Readme file by tomorrow so here

file for 1993, BEFORE you make any changes to it for 1993.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't mean to imply that I was a weenie on
Atari, I've been solid Atari since 1984 or 1985, I've got an 800XL and 130XE
(remember them?!) around here some where, and I've had my ST for about 5
years. What other software would you recommend? Keep in mind I'm no
accountant.
I did split the transaction into 3 seperate transactions and I did get
it all in, I quess I just wondered if anyone else has had this happen. Out of
all the software I've had I've never called any tech support, I've written two
letters, with one reply, no satisfaction from either. I either figure it out
for myself or forget about it. Anyway thanks for all the help.

I have found some Tech supports very good and worth while. I
have had to call them more than once. Often I have found a bug they
have been working on and I end up with a program update that fixes
the problem or they give me a simple fix. Not that it is always
good, sometimes I hit someone who does not know and could care less.
There is a business accounting package or two for the Atari
ST line. One I believe has a demo in the library. You might try a
search for accounting. If I remember right it is a older version so
the current version should be an improvement over the demo. I also
believe it is a rather complex program so you should not expect to
find all the features from just hacking around in the demo.

There is a program called Accounts 2.0. I've never used or seen it,

Accounts 2 is Available from DMC Publishing and is designed for the first-time

As far as I know, this is the latest version (4.08). That is the
version I have.
All,
The Tax file I have been working on is now in the library. Let me know
if you have problems with it. If you use the IRS Chart, there are only 2
cells you should need to do anything to. You will recongnize them because the
have questions associated with them. Both must be answered in the cells.
EVERYONE SHOULD ANSWER THE QUESTIONS!!!! They are "Did you live with your
spouse" and "Did your spouse work". One is in the 1st part of the Chart, the
other is near the front of Worksheet 1.
Also, DO FORM 1040 DOWN TO LINE 30 (SKIPPING LINES 16,24A, & 24B)
BEFORE YOU TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF THE IRA CHART!!!
If you have an amount for line 16 and line 24a or 24b, let me know.
Hope it helps some of you.

talking about Medicare you recieved or paid. In the Tax file I thought I put
tax codes (Some of which came from my own head) in for any cell that could use
them. I need to know more about what it is your having trouble with.
John,
That does happen sometimes and I could'nt seem to get rid of it.
However, If you highlight that cell in browse mode, hit return 3 times, click

Federal Income tax withheld $... Wages, Tips, Other Compensations $... Social

All,
I have to correct something I said earlier about the Tax file. About the 2
questions in the IRA Chart, I said they both have to be answered. Well what I
should have said is, they both must be `X'ed if they are true, even if they
dont apply. For example, if your Filing Status is Married filing jointly, and
you lived with your spouse, you must put an X in the cell by the question "If
you lived with your Spouse during the year, check this box." No matter what
your situation, if you lived with your spouse, put an X in that cell.
John,
You will find that when you put an X in that box, you will no longer
get that "yes" in the married filing separately cell.
P.S. to all
The same applies to the cell at the beginning of Worksheet 1. It must be
check if the statement with it is true.

Thomas,
First off, I have never heard of DBL or CASDI. Can anyone else help
Thomas on this?
Next, in reguards to codes, if you look at the cells in the tax file I
made and you downloaded, many of them will have something like this "\103" in
them. any time you see a "\" infront of a number like that, it is a code I
used to tell Phasar to go to the budget catagories and find one with a code
that matches the number after the "\". So what you need to do is to determine
the catagories that have amounts that go in that cell and give them that code.
For instance, \130 is Unemplyment Compensation. If you recieved unemployment
during 1992 you should have an income budget catagory for it and you should
give it the code 130. Now Phasar will put that amount in that cell.
As for what is on your W-2, Thomas you are really going to have to tak
a look in the Tax booklet for Form 1040. It gives instructions on all this
things. It goes throuh the form 1040 line by line. Take a look at it and
then if I you need more help let me know. Remember though, I am not an
account and cannot give Tax advise. I can really only help you to understand
how to use the Phasar Tax file I uploaded.
Hope this helps some. :)

FICA taxes are sometimes divided by employers into two deductions instead of
one <normally referred to as your Social Security tax>.....regardless of which
method is used the total amount deducted from your paycheck is the same.
For example:
a. the percentage used for FICA when it is the only listed deduction is 7.65%
of your gross pay <for each pay period>.
b. the percentage when it is split is Social Security -- 6.2% and Medicare --
1.45%
Hope this helps.

CASDI has nothing to do with SocSec or Medicare. it is treated the same as an

Your computer, I dont believe is really freezing. I have noticed this
problem too. I think that the file is so big, with so many calculations that
it has really slowed down certain operations. I think if you check your drive
you will see that it is busy and I have found that I can wait it out. I do
recomend writing down code that you wish to add, change or delete, and then go
into the regualar Phasar program for that. It saves a lot of time.
Note: you will have a similiar problem when you make changes to some
of the cell. If you see that your HD light blinking away it will stop, it is
just working hard.
Doug,
You will notice a lot of change between 3.02 and 4.09, I'm sure.

Ron,
Exactly why the program slows in some operations, I'm not sure. I
think there may be a loop that I have overlooked or something. There is so
much referencing from cell to cell, form to form, its just hard to say. I
think though that once you have it set-up for your specific needs, I will
serve you just fine.
The file has been a lot of work, but I'd like it to be better. I'll
be continueing to work on it from time to time this year and hope to have
something better for next year complete with instructions. It will include a
Sch. D and probably a Sch. D1. I want it to be so automactic that people can
just sit down for an hour or so and have their current year taxes done and
have a projection for next year(provided they don't need forms that aren't
included.
As you probably noticed, I tried to make it so that once you enter
your filing status, and checked a couple of things on the IRA chart, the thing
will automaticly put yours and your spouses IRA deduction in the proper cell.
This might be why the thing is slow at times. That required a lot of (and)
and (or) type functions.
Well Ron, I hope it is working OK for you and let me know if you have
any other questions.
Flakes,
Your probably right! But isn't mustard a plant or something that that
the workers in the field used to have to cut, but when they get to hold, they
can't cut the MUSTARD any more? hmmmmm! Hey! This sound like a new

Here's the scoop. I called Psygnosis and talked to a person who was pretty
well versed in the Atari version. He said the upgrade cost was determined by
the time of the upgrade (there hasn't been one for quite awhile), some
improved (invisible to the user) code, and new tax templates.
From what I gathered, if your current version (mine is 4.03) is working, I'd
hesitate to spend the $24.95 upgrade fee. He couldn't point to any new
features, but that could be because he wasn't 'expert' in the Atari version.
